Stan Lee's Comikaze 2015

This was a pretty busy convention for me this year. Space Command had a panel where they debuted a new trailer with some of the completed FX work and rough color correction. Part of the cast was there for a Q&A session and panel. They also talked about their plans for more upcoming films.

I also attended another panel for Triborn, a project that I'm discussing coming on board to shoot. It's an original science fiction property and has some great names attached. For being a small, independent production, there was a pretty good sized crowd in attendance.

The big event, however, was the premiere of Nobility. The guys have really been working hard in post to get this thing finished and we were able to screen a near-final cut of the film. It was well received and there were a lot of people there to see it. Here's what people were saying on Twitter after the showing:

Comikaze was a good convention and it was a real pleasure to have participated in a couple of the projects that were featured there. Hopefully I'll be back again next year with more projects to share with the world.

Arriving at the show!

Filmfax Magazine April 2015

Earlier this year, Space Command was featured in the April 2015 issue of Filmfax magazine, complete with a multi-page article as well as the main cover story and image. It's an honor to share space with Star Trek's Leonard Nemoy, who also made the cover.

The article mostly covers the writing and directing side, as well as post VFX plans. It doesn't really talk about the shooting process at all. Nonetheless, it's still cool to see a project I shot get some love in an actual print magazine.

Back from San Diego Comic Con

I took last week off to attend Comic Con. Space Command had a panel along with a signing, and Nobility had a panel, a couple signings, and a booth. It's pretty cool to have shot two projects that both have panels at SDCC.

The big announcement for Nobility is that they will be debuting the series at Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo in October. I've been told that they've brought a colorist on to finish the looks and the FX are coming along nicely. A lot of these sci-fi films I shoot have very long post-production times, mostly due to the amount of VFX work needed on lower budgets. So it'll be nice to have Nobility coming out this year and seeing the final product.

Space Command: Redemption, that's a wrap!

Yesterday we wrapped the second leg of shooting on Space Command: Redemption and that is a wrap on principle photography.  We shot 13 first unit days, 7 second unit days, and now we wait for editing and post to see if there are any pickups that are needed.  We had quite a few sweltering hot days, but made it through.

It was a pleasure to work with the many talented actors who came on board: Ethan McDowell, Sara Maraffino, Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Falling Skies), Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager, Stargate: Atlantis), Bill Mumy (Babylon 5, Lost in Space), Mira Furlan (Lost, Babylon 5), Bryan McClure, Bruce Boxleitner (TRON, Babylon 5, TRON: Legacy), and Michael Harney (Orange is the New Black, True Detective, Deadwood).

Space Command: Redemption in production

I've been busy the last couple weeks with prepping and shooting leg two of Space Command: Redemption.  We just wrapped day 4 and things are going well.  We're getting some really good footage.  The first leg we shot was fairly static, as it had a ton of visual effects and needed a more or less locked camera for the sake of not driving our VFX team insane.  So on this part, I've been taking advantage of us being on sets to add some movement and energy to the shots.  On our bridge set, I have the camera moving at all times, putting our Dana Dolly to good use.  Today we shot out a corridor of the ship and we brought in my Steadicam guy (and 2nd Unit DP), Scott Baker, who did a fantastic job.

It's been four long, hot days and we have six more days coming up,  five on set and one on location.  I'm tired and glad we have a 14 hour turnaround today, but I'm excited to see what else we shoot.  The shoot has been a challenge, but we are making our way through it and getting some great stuff.  Props to my fantastic G&E team.
